AO3 & Fanfic Terms
Common terminology used on Archive of Our Own and within fanfiction communities. Useful for understanding tags and content labels across the archive.
A tag indicating emotional distress, suffering, or turmoil — either internal or caused by circumstances. Can range from mild sadness to deeply harrowing content.
Alternate Universe. A story or scenario where characters exist in a setting different from their original canon — e.g. a coffee shop AU, modern AU, or fantasy AU.
The officially established facts, events, and characterisations of a story or series. Content described as "canon" is what actually happened within the source material.
A notice given before content that may be distressing or sensitive. Allows readers to make informed choices about what they engage with.
Light, warm, feel-good content with little to no conflict. Typically wholesome and comforting in tone.
A personal interpretation or belief about a character or story that is not explicitly stated in the source material but is treated as true by the individual fan.
A genre where one character experiences pain or distress (physical or emotional) and another provides care and comfort. Often explores vulnerability and closeness.
Out of Character. Describes a portrayal where a character behaves in ways inconsistent with their established personality or canon behaviour.
Original Character. A character created by the fan or author rather than taken from existing source material.
A story where a relationship develops gradually over a long period, with romantic or emotional tension building slowly before any resolution.
Work in Progress. Content that has been shared publicly but is not yet complete.
Kink & Content Terms 18+
Definitions for adult content tags and kink terminology used across this archive. All content featuring these tags is intended for adults only.
The care, comfort, and emotional support provided after an intense scene or experience. An important part of responsible roleplay involving power dynamics or heavy themes.
Consensual Non-Consent. A roleplay dynamic where one party acts as though they are not consenting, while all actual parties have pre-agreed to the scenario. Entirely fictional.
A broad content tag indicating the presence of difficult, disturbing, or morally complex subject matter. Does not specify the exact nature of the content.
Dubious Consent. Fictional scenarios where the level of consent is unclear or ambiguous. A common fanfic tag — always fictional and not an endorsement of real-world behaviour.
Scenarios involving an imbalance of authority, control, or dominance between characters. Can be romantic, platonic, or sexual in nature depending on context and tags.
A pre-agreed word or signal used to pause or stop an intense roleplay or scene. Appears in fiction as a narrative device; in real practice it is a safety tool.
Roleplay & Bot Terms
Terminology specific to AI character bots, roleplay, and the communities around them.
An AI character built using a system prompt or persona definition. Bots are designed to roleplay as a specific character and respond in that character's voice.
A downloadable file containing the full character definition and system prompt for a bot. Used to import a character into a compatible AI platform.
When a bot or roleplay partner responds outside of the established character voice — e.g. referencing being an AI or speaking as themselves rather than the character.
An attempt to bypass a platform's content filters or a bot's built-in restrictions. This archive does not endorse or support jailbreaking platforms.
A supplementary document attached to a bot or AI session that provides background world-building, lore, or context — triggered by keywords within the conversation.
The defined character identity given to an AI bot — including personality, speech patterns, backstory, and behavioural rules.
The hidden instruction set given to an AI at the start of a session that defines how it should behave, who it is playing, and what rules it follows.
